How we tested

Cooling Performance

We tested to see how well each refrigerator maintained cool temperatures that keep your food fresh much longer.

Storage + Accessibility

Flexibility and accessibility was a priority, so we checked for good internal layout and ease of storing and taking out items.

Energy Efficiency + Noise

Fridges can be noisy and consume a lot of electricity; so we measured how eco- and ear-friendly each refrigerator was.

Online reviews

We analysed online reviews to identify common praises and concerns, giving insight into real-world performance.

Best Overall

Hitachi 569L Side By Side Deluxe (R-MX700PMS0)

What We Like

This food has vacuum-sealing technology to for fresh food storage
Additional perk of having an ice and water dispenser
Sleek, modern design and organisation

What We Don’t Like

Doors and compartments are a bit smaller because of its design
It only has a 2-tick energy rating
It’s quite bulky and needs a lot of kitchen space

After testing several models, the 3-door Hitachi R-MX700PMS0 gets the best overall fridge award.

Why?” you might ask. Well, here’s the thing.

If you’re like me who likes to treat themselves to some fancy dinner every once in a while, maybe you’d get some salmon, maybe even some beef. But the thing is, work and stress can get me so busy that I can only cook it by the end of the week – sometimes not even till the weekend!

So into the refrigerator these items go. For a week or more. “Wouldn’t that make it lose its freshness?

We thought of that too, but with this side-by-side refrigerator, that wasn’t an issue. It’s got this sealing technology where when you close the refrigerator doors, it keeps it airtight, maintaining just the right level of humidity and air pressure to keep your produce nice and fresh.

Because its compartments are vacuum-sealed, there’s also little to no mixing of strong smells, especially from food like garlic and fish.

The quick cooling system ensures drinks and groceries are chilled faster

And if that’s not enough, this fridge also comes with a built-in ice and water dispenser.

Pretty neat, right? It was to me, because I can’t tell you the countless times where I was needing something cold to drink on a hot day and what do you know, I’ve forgotten to refill the ice trays! Nothing can sour the mood so fast than tepid water on a warm day.

However, there’s no perfect machine and this one has its drawbacks.

Because the refrigerator has all these perks, like extra compartments, dispensers and all, it’s pretty bulky. If you choose this, be prepared for some major reorganising in the kitchen – unless you already have enough floorspace for it.

It’s size and extra fittings also mean that the compartments itself are smaller than the regular fridge, so you’ll need to step up your organising skills. Don’t worry though, as its layout is still well-optimised for storage.

A bigger downside to this is the 2-tick energy efficient rating. I know, I know. Electricity bills can be concerning, but it’s a fair compromise for the performance you get in return.

So overall, this is a solid choice that has everything one might need from a refrigerator.

Best Value

Midea 320L Bottom Mounted Fridge (MDRB470MGD28)

What We Like

The fridge has a bottom freezer compartment instead for better accessibility
It has efficient cooling and energy use
Operates quietly most of the time

What We Don’t Like

Freezer space is quite compact
Smart features require Wi-Fi connection

If you’re looking for a fridge that’s value-adding, then the Midea 320L Bottom Mounted Fridge is your best bet.

Though smaller in size and not fancy like a French door type, this refrigerator can go toe to toe with its bigger counterparts. Just as much chilling capabilities, especially with the Metal Cooling feature.

One big advantage of this fridge is its cooling capabilities. At one point, we’ve all done opened our refrigerators in search of food, not find anything and close it, only to open it again in hopes of food magically appearing in your shelves.

Doing this actually impacts the refrigerator’s inside temperature. But with this Midea model, no matter how many times you open it, temperatures get adjusted and keeps the cold air in. No more temperature swinging!

The Metal Cooling feature helps retain cold air, ensuring even cooling throughout the fridge.

Another good thing, and honestly it’s a small but appreciated detail, is the gentle assist when closing. When there’s a gap detected, the refrigerator door gets closed automatically, which saved us from nights of accidentally leaving the door ajar.

Our only small complaint about this fridge is how compact the freezer was. I guess it’s to be expected from a 2-compartment fridge, but given the outside build we assumed there would be more room. But, if you’re in a smaller household or don’t necessarily buy things in bulk, then the space should be more than enough.

The bigger issue though, is that for us to utilise the smart features, we need to have Wi-Fi connectivity. Which technically isn’t a problem but if you know you’ll have spotty internet, then it’s something worth noting before buying this refrigerator.

All in all, this fridge definitely has great value for its price. It’s got practical features and sizing, and most importantly efficient cooling, making it a great pick for those looking for a quality refrigerator that won’t drain your wallets.

Best Compact

PowerPac 71L Mini Bar Fridge (PPF85)

What We Like

The fridge’s compact size is perfect for small spaces
It has adjustable shelves that make organisation more flexible

What We Don’t Like

Limited freezer capacity
It needs to be manually defrosted and takes time to clean

Sometimes a large refrigerator isn’t really on the table when you’re living in small quarters. Does that mean you’ll have to forego storing your food and other perishables? Of course not!

The PowerPac 71L Mini Bar Fridge (PPF85) is the perfect solution for smaller spaces, especially with a layout that makes the most out of every inch.

Now, when we first tested it, we were kind of sceptical because of the mixed reviews about Powerpac models. I thought, “Can this even fit our food?” And what about the freezer? It didn’t seem like it would get on our list, but this mini fridge proved us wrong.

To our surprise, it worked well just as any normal-sized fridge would do. And the top freezer compartment, though small, was just as effective in keeping cold cuts frozen.

What made us like this fridge even more were the adjustable shelves – bigger items could be stored without a fuss, especially when we held a mini get together one time and we had to cool 1-liter sodas.

The adjustable shelves made it easy to customise the space for different items.

But then again, its biggest advantage is also the most obvious drawback. The freezer is pretty small, so when you’re buying groceries you need to keep in mind the available space you have. But if size is not a deal breaker, then this compact fridge is great pick.

A slightly bigger issue though is how fast frost would form inside, which we then had to manually defrost. When we noticed almost an inch-thick frost growing on our walls, we knew it was time to unplug and defrost so that it’ll thaw out. But because it’s small, it was a quick clean. Just something to take note of.

Best Energy-Efficient

LG 344L Bottom Freezer Refrigerator (GB-B3443EP/GB-B3443PY/GB-B3442BE) (Black/Silver/Beige)

What We Like

4-tick energy efficiency rating that can save on electricity bills
Designed with freezer at the bottom for easy access
Keeps food fresh longer with advanced cooling tech

What We Don’t Like

Wi-Fi connectivity issues can mess with smart features
Repair costs can be quite expensive

If you’re concerned about your electricity bill ramping up and want to keep it at a minimum, then the energy-efficient LG 344L Bottom Freezer Refrigerator (GB-B3443EP) is your best bet.

LG’s widely known for their energy-efficient appliances, and this fridge did not disappoint. While we didn’t want to hope too high, the 4-tick energy was real and certified when we compared our electricity bills between months.

Linear Cooling™ and Door Cooling+™ keep food fresh by maintaining an even temperature, even with frequent door openings.

Another impressive thing we noticed were the cooling features it had. Food is kept fresh much longer because of the circulation and vents pushing cool air around the refrigerator, reaching not just the door shelves but also the bottom compartments.

How did we come to this conclusion? Well, it was actually a bag of spinach that told us. We bought one in the hopes of kickstarting “healthy eating habits” but promptly forgot about it when the fridge doors were closed. After almost a week and finally remembering it, we thought it’d be wilted but surprise, surprise! It was still crisp – though obviously not as fresh as the day we bought it.

One issue we did encounter though was our intermittent WiFi connection messing with the smart features. There was a period where the app wasn’t working smoothly, which can be frustrating at times.

Something to also take note of is the potential repair costs. We didn’t necessarily experience this firsthand, but a handful of online reviews mentioned how repair parts can be expensive in case of a break down.

Best for Large Households

Sharp 660L Multi Door Refrigerator (SJ-FX660S2-BK)

What We Like

Big compartments can be good for large families
Consistent cooling helps with fresh food storage
Adjustable temperature settings makes organisation flexible

What We Don’t Like

Large kitchen space is needed due to bulky design
Is more on the expensive end of fridges

Large households need efficient refrigerators too and that’s where the spacious Sharp 660L Multi Door Refrigerator (SJ-FX660S2-BK) comes in.

The thing that made us go, “yep, this one’s the best for big families,” was when we tried to store 30-egg trays and it fit. Quite perfectly too. Then, with egg trays still inside, we also stored several drinks – 2-liter juice bottles and a 6-pack beer. They all fit. So yes, storage is not a question for this spacious refrigerator.

But then you might say, “wouldn’t too much items in the fridge prevent cool airflow?”

We thought of that too, but when we checked again, there wasn’t much of a difference in the temperature. Still the same cold air that kept everything fresh. This happens because the refrigerator maintains a steady temperature and controls moisture levels, so we didn’t have to worry about the state of our food in this one.

J-Tech Inverter ensures consistent cooling throughout the fridge, keeping your food fresh longer.

Aside from these, we also liked how flexible this Sharp model can be. No, it can’t bend backwards, but the customisable temperature setting for each compartment really helped a ton when storing different types of food. Doesn’t matter if one needs to freeze raw meat or chill fruits, we just had to specify the setting and voila! Fresh produce all the way.

But that doesn’t mean that this fridge has no downsides.

Because of the impressive capacity, this also means that it’s undeniably massive. Buying this would be a deliberate choice because of the kitchen space needed to house the refrigerator, including the setting up because of how heavy it is.

Price-wise, it’s also much higher than the usual fridge. However, Sharp is known for making durable appliances so you could view this as a lifetime investment, especially for growing families. A reliable appliance that’ll grow with you for decades and more would certainly be worthwhile. But if budget is a concern, it’s definitely something to consider.
